Mushrooms & Dead Tree's

Bellevue, WA

Fungus and dying Tree's

If you find a mushroom growing directly on a tree near your home or property. This is a huge sign that the tree is near the end of it’s life, and it is time for you to think about cutting down the tree. We have put together a few tips, and signs that your tree is infected with fungus.

Once you see the sprouting body of the mushroom, it is too late, the mycelium network has already spread through the tree. By the time the mushroom forms, the tree is already being decomposed from the inside out.

Mushrooms only sprout at certain times during the year. So it is important to always keep an eye out for mushrooms on your tree's. The mushrooms will sprout and decay within a few weeks, and many people won't even notice. Mushrooms will typically sprout in the spring and fall following moderate to heavy rain.

Mushrooms are a likely sign that your tree is rotting and close to the end of it’s life. Mushrooms are natures way of decomposing all different types of plants, and animals. They are an essential part of the natural cycle of living things.

If you notice mushrooms growing from your tree, it is typically a sign that the tree is weak and unstable. When a tree is infected with mushrooms is has a much greater chance of falling or topplying over during the next Washington windstorm.

Your tree may still appear healthy, and in fact may still stand for years to come. The fact remains that mushrooms are a sign of a dying tree. Mushrooms and fungus can take years, and some times decades to full infect a healthy tree.

A mushroom sprouts only after it has fully infected the trunk of the tree, or it’s roots. So the simple fact that you are seeing the sprouting body of a mushroom means there is a vast network of mycelium growing beneath the service. Mushrooms don’t sprout above the service until they have fully ingrained themselves in the wood or soil.

Sprouting Near the tree or on the tree

There is a huge difference between a mushroom and mycelium network growing on the tree and simply near the tree. If the mushroom and it's underground mycelium network is simply growing in the soil around the tree, this is actually a great sign that you have healthy soil. Mushrooms and tree's work together in many ways. The mushrooms are actually providing nutrients to the tree, while the tree is providing carbohydrates for the mycelium to thrive.

It is obvious when a mushroom is growing directly on the tree trunk. If this is the case, the tree is more than likely on it's last leg. Some mushrooms will bring the tree down within a year or two, while other mushrooms will slowly kill the tree over a decade or more. There are millions of different types of mushrooms, and they all affect the tree's slightly different.

Many time we find mushrooms at the base of the tree, or within a few feet of the tree. This is when it gets difficult to know for sure. Some fungi will infect the roots of the tree, which will eventually cause the tree to fall. If you suspect the roots of your tree are infected, it is best to simply remove the tree all together and plant a new one. Give us a call today for a free quote.

Other times, we find mushrooms that are growing in the soil around the tree. This is actually a great sign that the tree is growing in healthy soil. So it is not always easy to tell, so as a general rule, if you see mushrooms growing close to the trunk of the tree, it is best to just keep an eye on the tree throughout the year. If you notice any dead branches, or notice the tree isn't producing as many leaves as it once did. These are all signs the tree is dead or dying and needs to be cut down.
